What is this Hollywood beauty trend ‘oil pulling’ all about?

ANSWER: Oil pulling is being touted to flush toxins, fight infection, whiten teeth & make your skin glow. It’s an ancient Ayurvedic practice dating back thousands of years. Natural health experts agree, oil pulling reduces gingivitis by 60% and plaque by 30%.  It draws bacteria, yeast & other toxins out of gum tissue and crevices between teeth.

Step 1: Choose an oil. Sesame oil, sunflower or coconut oil.  Since coconut oil is semi solid, put a few spoonfuls in a glass & set the glass in a bowl of hot water to soften. Coconut oil has the added benefit of lauric acid which is an antimicrobial agent and may help prevent tooth decay.
Step 2: Add a drop of food grade essential oil to improve the taste. Peppermint, spearmint & clove oils are great choices.
Step 3: Experts advise oil pulling for 10 minutes daily. Put 2 tsp of preferred oil in mouth, then swish & swirl, repeatedly sucking & pulling the oil between your teeth.
Step 4: Spit “pulled” oil into a cup or glass & then empty in the trash because spitting “pulled” oil into the sink can clog pipes. Once you spit the oil out, rinse with warm water & brush your teeth. Then disinfect your toothbrush with a splash of hydrogen peroxide, which will kill any bacteria and yeast.
